It is true that over consumption is a huge problem in the developed world in terms of the carbon produced, but there are things we can do when shopping to minimise our impact on the environment.
Generally, locally grown produce will be more environmentally friendly as less carbon will have been produced its transport to market. This is not always the case, however, if produce has been grown in a heated greenhouse, in which case carbon savings in transport may have been offset in the resources used to heat the greenhouse. As a rule, its safer to eat vegetables that are in season.
